This February, join me for a different kind of love story. Seven days exploring how loving yourself first isn’t selfish—it’s how you become capable of the kind of love that changes everything. Because hope begins when you fill your own well.
Love is a force in motion. It builds when it’s shared and transforms everything it touches. But here’s the truth most of us learn too late: love doesn’t arrive from somewhere else. It flows from within.
The velocity of love—how freely we let it move through our lives—determines not just our relationships, but our entire life’s trajectory.
And it starts with the hardest, most essential love of all: loving ourselves first.
We use the word love to describe our feelings about a chocolate chip cookie, a breathtaking sunset, a great movie, or a beautiful flower.
When we move into the realm of human connection—the people who know us best, the person we’ve built a life with, the child we’d die to protect—love becomes something different entirely. Not just a feeling we experience, but an energy we create and share.
Still, we call it by the same word. Simply love.
But love is anything but simple.
Love’s many currents
When we think about love (especially in February!), it’s often romantic love.
We read books about finding a wonderful partner, keeping a supportive partner, healing from a toxic partner. We analyze our relationship patterns, attachment styles, and romantic hopes. We put enormous energy into this one dimension of love, as if romance is love’s highest and most complete expression.
And while romantic love can be beautiful and transformative, it’s actually just one small tributary of love’s many currents.
When we release our grip on the idea that romantic love is the pinnacle—the ultimate validation of our worth—we free up tremendous energy.
We stop chasing the illusion that a partner can fill every empty space within us.
And in that freedom, we can experience love as it truly is: the fundamental current animating everything good. A force that connects, creates, heals, and renews.
Love in abundance
Here’s what sets love apart from almost everything else we pursue in life.
Most things we want operate on scarcity logic. We think that the more we give away, the less we have. And that can be true. Money, time, energy, attention—these all tend to divide when distributed.
But love works differently.
Love operates on abundance logic. Love expands when shared.
Think of a candle flame. You can light a thousand candles from a single flame, and your candle doesn’t dim. It burns just as bright. Now there’s simply more light in the world.
Or a seed. Plant one, nurture it, and it becomes a tree producing thousands of seeds. The original seed isn’t diminished by this multiplication. It’s fulfilled.
